Liam hails new DFID funding for Islamic Relief

Liam today welcomed news that Islamic Relief is set to receive funding of at least £3.75 million over the next five years from the Department for International Development (DFID).

Islamic Relief are one of 8 organisations receiving a share of a £90 million funding package for international development organisations working in partnership with DFID.

The funds will boost the independent charity's ongoing work in the developing world, including efforts to improve healthcare for mothers and children in Pakistan.

Islamic Relief's International Programmes Director Dr Hossam Said said:

"This new money will help Islamic Relief to reach even more people globally and ensure that the impact we have on their lives is greater. We'll make sure their voices are heard worldwide.

"In the 20 years since we set up Islamic Relief we have received tremendous support from DFID. This has helped foster a robust working partnership built on mutual trust, independence and hard work. This ongoing relationship is further enhanced by these new funds."

Emphasising the value of partnership working to the UK's international development aid programme Gareth Thomas said:

"Islamic Relief has strong links in the countries where it works and an established reputation with the people there. It exists to help the poor in the developing world help themselves. Working in partnership - with Islamic Relief, with local people - backed by these new funds, is an effective way to achieve our shared aims of global poverty reduction."

Liam said

“I’m delighted that DFID have recognised the great work done by Islamic Relief with provision of increased funding over the next 5 years. I’m sure the positive impact of this money over the next 5 years will be tremendous’.

‘I hope to do my part by raising money by running the Stratford Half Marathon in May, to go to the Jammu Kashmir Development Foundation’s Kashmir Quake Appeal, and help those most in need at this time’.
