LIAM WINS REPRIEVE FOR POST OFFICE BUS

Liam Byrne, MP for Birmingham Hodge Hill has welcomed news that a free bus service to take residents from Chipperfield Road to the nearest Post Office on the Heathway has been saved thanks to Liam’s intervention.

The bus, provided by Tesco’s, is a lifeline for many elderly residents who were left without a local Post Office when the One Stop Shop that had housed a counter – was bought out by Tesco – who refused to keep the service in store.

Liam’s team sprang into action, running a campaign and petition signed by hundreds of local residents, who were disgusted at the prospect of having no Post Office counter service locally.

As a result a new site has been found for a Post Office on Ermington Crescent - but Liam has been told that the store opening has been delayed, and is now not expected to open until 22nd May.

Liam’s office demanded that Tesco make good their promise that residents should be unaffected by their decision to remove the Post Office counter from their Chipperfield Road Store. Thanks to Liam’s intervention, representatives from Tesco have seen sense, agreeing to run a regular free link service every Monday until the new Post Office opens.

The details of the service are as follows:

Leaves from: Outside Chipperfield Road store

To: Heathway Post Office

Times: From 9am to 4.30pm – beginning at the Firs at 9am, and operating on a half hourly cycle.

Liam said

“I’m delighted that our campaign to keep a Post Office on the Firs has had a positive result. But I also want to make sure that Tesco’s keep their word and ensure that local residents have access to services while the new Post Office is being fitted out”.

‘I’m pleased that Tesco have agreed to continue running the free bus link from Chipperfield Road all day, every Monday, until the new store opens’.
