Get a grip on street patrols, Liam warns Council
Liam Byrne MP today warned the city council to get a grip on the street patrols paid to lead the charge against grime.

The Hodge Hill MP is demanding urgent talks with the city's chief executive after council officials revealed they were still unable to tell him which kind of wardens were patrolling where in Hodge Hill and with what powers - four months after the MP asked for answers.

The admission came just days after the council's 'Mr Clean', Ian Coghill, said rich parts of Birmingham might be getting a better cleaning service than less wealthy parts like Hodge Hill.

Asylum amnesty is simply not fair for hardworking Birmingham

by Liam Byrne MP
As the MP for Hodge Hill I do not believe that an amnesty of failed asylum seekers is in the best interests of my constituents nor citizens in the rest of the city – for one simple reason; it simply isn’t fair.

We have a proud tradition in this country of providing protection of those fleeing persecution. We should preserve this. But up to 70% of asylum claims are proved – typically by judges – to be without foundation.

I think these people shouldn’t be allowed to work. We work hard to help people go home voluntarily. But where that hand of support is pushed away, I think we need to detain and deport people. Last year – my first as immigration minister – we deported more than ever before.

Byrne call for free cash hotspots in Hodge Hill
Liam Byrne has asked his constituents to name and shame cashpoints that charge a fee for withdrawals and to suggest which areas in Hodge Hill are most in need of a free machine.

The call comes as part of a government deal announced at the end of last year to provide 600 new non-charging cash machines throughout the country in areas like Hodge Hill.
