Byrne launches Hodge Hill drugs strategy with Prime Minister
The Prime Minister today added his voice to Liam Byrne’s Hodge Hill action plan to get drugs off the district’s streets.

The Hodge Hill MP has campaigned for over a year to get the new strategy in place. Gordon Brown gave the plan his backing on the same day the Home Secretary launched the Government’s national drugs strategy.

Hodge Hill is the first area in Birmingham to draw up such plans.

Liam said:

“Gordon Brown has promised his 100 percent support in our battle to cut drug-related crime. And I have promised him that we will lead the battle against drugs in Hodge Hill. The £1 billion he is investing will really make a difference to local families.

I've had a number of letters recently from Hodge Hill constituents about climate change. Some of these have been from young people in our area.

I have also been emailed by MTV, who have produced an online carbon calculator for young people - it shows how much carbon you may be producing by leaving your TV on standby or your mobile charger plugged in when your phone's in your pocket. And it also advises on how you can make a difference.

Here's the link: www.mtv.co.uk/switch_carbon.

Click here to email me and let me know what you think.

I'm really proud of what our Government is doing - we're really leading the way internationally in tackling climate change.

But every little bit we do as individuals and families will make a lot of difference.

Liam celebrates £400m government investment in New Street deal as campaign gets its reward

Liam today welcomed confirmation that the Government is investing almost £400m to transform Birmingham New Street station and make journeys easier for millions of passengers from Hodge Hill, the wider West Midlands region and beyond.

Liam worked with Government colleagues, Ruth Kelly, Secretary of State for Transport, and John Hutton, Secretary of State for Business, Enterprise & Regulatory Reform in order to secure the investment.

Liam said:

“This is simply fantastic news for Birmingham and the West Midlands. I want to thank Ruth Kelly and John Hutton for their huge vote of confidence today, and to Birmingham and its partners who worked so hard to sweat the details since last summer. But the real credit goes to the people of Birmingham and the West Midlands who gave such voice to the campaign for New Street.

"Today the region gets its reward. I said a new New Street was my number one priority as Regional Minister. Today is proof that the West Midlands can get huge deals done when we set ambitious goals and pull together as a team.”
