LIAM LAUNCHES DIGNITY IN CARE CAMPAIGN

DIGNITY AND RESPECT FOR OLDER PEOPLE should be centre-stage in the NHS and social care system: that’s the message of a new campaign launched today Health Minister Liam Byrne MP.

Health minister Liam Byrne MP announced today a national campaign for dignity in care in every part of the country, including:

• a national network of local dignity ambassadors
• a series of roadshows and training events to promote dignity for older people and to celebrate high quality services
• a new national awards scheme which recognises people, and service providers, who have been prepared to stand up for older people’s dignity
• a new website aimed at ‘silver surfers’ and their carers, detailing the best services in the country for older people

The Dignity in Care campaign is launched at the same time as the Department of Health’s five year plan for older people’s care (the National Service Framework).

Liam Byrne MP said:

‘Over the last few months I have visited every region of the country to listen to older people’s views. What older people tell me loud and clear is that they want dignity and respect in all aspects of their lives, including in the health and social care system.

‘Our aging population is an opportunity not a burden. Our society as a whole will benefit from more people enjoying the rewards of retirement. But those years must be characterised by dignity and respect in all care settings – in the home, hospital, or in care homes.

‘I want zero tolerance on all behaviour which does not accord older people the dignity they deserve, and I am working with care providers and older people’s champions and advocates to ensure dignity for all.’
